In January 2014, Athens Administrators launched Tour de Athens, a yearlong employee performance and engagement effort. The campaign aimed to foster a friendly, competitive environment and ultimately drive claims closures.

Named after the famous Tour de France bicycle race, the campaign had both team and individual incentives. It comprised of three intensive, month-long stages, as well as a final annual challenge. Throughout the competition, employees were rewarded for closing claims — including the most, the highest-valued, and the oldest claims.

During each month-long stage, participants were allowed to work up to two hours of overtime per day, in order to focus exclusively on claims closures. Their efforts totaled approximately $125,000 in overtime. At the conclusion of every stage, the company celebrated results and rewarded team and individual performance. Prizes included yellow jerseys, medals, and wage bonuses.

Results

Historically, Athens Administrators has always encouraged a results-focused environment. The Tour de Athens campaign propelled this tradition to new heights. Claim staff fully embraced the challenge, and their hard work paid off:

  • Over 14,000 claims were closed
  • 18% increase in claims closures over prior year
  • $250 million in incurred value

Tour de Athens introduced an innovative and successful approach to driving results. With high levels of investment, Athens was able to achieve equally high levels of client service, employee engagement, and companywide performance.
